Should you go gluten-free

Gluten-free products are available everywhere, and even restaurants have started offering gluten-free options. But what exactly is gluten, and is it harmful?

Gluten is a type of protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Going gluten-free is a health trend, but it’s very important to understand that only a certain group of individuals that are sensitive to gluten need to avoid it. If you are avoiding gluten to feel healthier, boost metabolism or to lose weight, then there is no added benefit. Gluten-free products are expensive, and people simply waste their money buying them thinking it will add to their overall health.

Celiac Disease: People suffering from this condition cannot tolerate gluten, even small amounts of gluten (50milligrams) can cause a lot of trouble like gastrointestinal discomfort. It triggers an inflammatory immune response that tends to damage the lining of the small intestine. It interferes with the absorption of nutrients from our food and can lead to a host of symptoms along with other problems like nerve damage, seizures, infertility and osteoporosis. (Non-celiac gluten sensitivity/gluten sensitivity – This condition also generates symptoms similar to celiac disease but without any intestinal damage.)

If you think you are intolerant to gluten it is important to get yourself tested before going gluten-free. As avoiding gluten means giving up on cereals, bread, pizza, pasta, beer and many other products like soy sauce, vegetables, supplements and also some toothpaste. It is extremely expensive and challenging to follow a gluten-free diet. It can also cause some nutritional deficiencies as they are not fortified with important vitamins and minerals.

In conclusion, there is no need to avoid gluten or opt for gluten-free products until you are sensitive to gluten or have a condition like celiac disease.
